Bus and taxi operators agree on Go! Durban rollout
eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba announced this week that the city has reached agreement with taxi and bus operators on fleet ownership, contract structure, compensation and jobs. That clears the way for Go! Durban’s delayed first stage to launch in December, with a soft launch in October. The city has invested roughly R9.7 billion in the programme to date. The first route is the C3 Corridor, running between Bridge City and Pinetown. The city will procure 22 buses, and the new Vehicle Operating Companies will buy feeder vehicles under contract. Three in four of the operating jobs will go to workers displaced by the new system.

Traders precinct boosts informal economy
eThekwini Municipality opened the Lucky Mngwengwe Traders' Precinct in Hammarsdale on 4 September, at the Boxer Node on Meyiwa Main Road. It gives informal traders about 75 upgraded spaces, made up of 23 secure containers and 52 trading tables. The precinct is named after Councillor Lucky Nhlanhla Mngwengwe, who served three terms from 2006 and championed the Hammarsdale Junction Mall, the Mpumalanga Museum and local housing projects. It follows a similar upgrade on Mansel Road in the Durban CBD, with a two-day Informal Economy Summit planned for October.
